A properly-fitted helmet may prevent TBI

On Behalf of | Apr 6, 2022 | Motor Vehicle Accidents

Wearing a helmet when riding a motorcycle can literally save a person’s life. However, an ill-fitted helmet cannot protect as well against a severe traumatic brain injury.

When people understand that sizing their helmet is just as important as wearing one, they can select headgear that provides optimal protection.

Fit and function

Not all motorcycle helmets meet the same standard. RideApart suggests that motorcyclists look for helmets that display a “DOT certified,” sticker. Products that meet this standard have met superior design requirements that make them safer and more reliable in a crash.

A well-fitted helmet will take into account the shape of a person’s head and the riding environment. Helmets should fit securely on a rider’s head and not wobble or shake. Many stores that sell motorcycle safety gear have professionals who can help with sizing, as well as recommend designs for specific riding environments.

Replacement

A helmet may minimize the risks of TBI because of the way it conforms to an individual’s head. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 5,014 motorcyclists suffered fatal injuries in crashes during the year 2019.  If motorcyclists do experience a crash, they should consider replacing their helmets right away.

A properly fitted helmet worn in conjunction with other safety gear can optimize a rider’s safety and make the ride more comfortable and enjoyable. Over time, the fit may loosen some and riders can benefit from periodically adjusting and tightening the fit of their helmet.

Motorcycle crashes can have detrimental outcomes for victims. A trustworthy attorney can advocate for victims and their families, especially in incidents where an accident resulted from motorist negligence.
